Amanda Updates: Amanda Bynes holds her fashion line dear
October 18, 2007

No doubt Amanda Bynes owns her fair share of expensive shoes and handbags.
But when it comes to clothes, splurging is not an option.
“I don’t think you should have to spend a ton of money for good-looking clothes; I shop at Steve & Barry’s for Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten line because I really love her collection,” the 21-year-old actress said during a call from New York.
Bynes is promoting her new clothing line, “Dear by Amanda Bynes,” which is sold exclusively in Steve & Barry’s stores. She talks about what she thinks is important when it comes to clothes.
Q. What is your fashion philosophy?
A. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and what suits your personality. Not everything works on my body type, so I focus on things that flatter me, but I don’t obsess over it.
Is there something in your wardrobe you just can’t live without?
Honestly, no. If I lost all my stuff, I’d be OK with it. I try not to get too attached to things because they are just material things. It’s family I couldn’t and wouldn’t want to live without.
What’s most important to you when it comes to clothing?
Quality, style and affordability. That’s why I chose Steve & Barry’s. Their philosophy on selling clothes that are not overpriced falls right in line with my fashion beliefs. Nothing in my collection costs more than $20.
How did you come up with the name “Dear” for your collection?
I was sitting around a table with several of the collaborative designers, and one of them drew a deer as a potential graphic for a T-shirt. That’s when it hit me. I hold many things dear to me. For some people, certain clothing items or jewelry pieces are dear to them. I thought it was appropriate and fun and fresh.
Speaking of fun and fresh, do you design clothes specifically with teens and 20-somethings in mind?
Actually my collection is pretty ageless. My mom — I’m not going to mention her age — loves the T-shirts and sweaters from it. Sure, miniskirts aren’t for everyone, but a lot of the pieces are meant to look nice at any age.
How does your collection stand out from others out there?
I don’t look at anyone else’s really. I kind of do my own thing. I’m definitely inspired by designers all over the world, but there’s room for everyone. I’m not trying to change the world with my collection, but I wouldn’t mind setting some trends.
